About the Professional Historians Association (South Australia) Inc.Every person and every organisation has a story to tell. A recorded history is a tangible way of both preserving and sharing the story of your school, business, company, charity, church, union, community group, local or regional council, government department, family or local area. Recording your history contributes to a better understanding of our society and our world. While you may only want to mark a specific event or anniversary, you need good historical research, writing and presentation to provide a clear understanding of your role, culture and significance.Anyone can commission historical work, but care must be taken to find the right person for the job. The writing of good histories is a specialised activity that requires sound historical skills and knowledge combined with an appreciation of how to present information. So go for the best - the accredited professional historian! Knowing and understanding history provides a valuable and important link between the past, the present and planning for the future. The Professional Historians Association (SA) Inc. represents the wide range of tertiary trained historians in South Australia, particularly those working outside the academic institutions. The PHA (SA) works to ensure that the skills of its members are available for the benefit of clients and the community, in the interest of extending historical knowledge. The Association promotes the research, recording, writing and presentation of history by qualified historians: most members have at least one tertiary qualification in history and are accredited under national standards determined by the Australian Council of Professional Historians Associations. The PHA (SA) promotes appropriate ethical standards of professional conduct (as defined in its Code of Ethics and that of the Australian Council of Professional Historians Associations). The PHA (SA) is an independent professional body that supports its members through:
The process of producing accurate, thorough and lively history is time consuming and complex: there is, for example, a vast array of archives and material. That is why you need an accredited professional historian who has the skills, a wide range of research methods and historical techniques, a well-developed knowledge and the experience to identify, collect and interpret research materials, obtain oral history and visual materials, and produce an engaging manuscript that locates your story in a wider historical context. The skills of an accredited professional historian complement those of other professionals such as archivists, archaeologists, anthropologists, architect, planners and lawyers. Accredited professional historians can also play an integral role when implementing records management and archival practices; for example. in advising on records appraisal and disposal. Accredited professional historians work for or on behalf of individuals and all types of organisations as private consultants, under contract or as employees. Federal and state government departments and statutory authorities, local government bodies, historical societies, heritage groups, universities, museums, research organisations, libraries and private firms (particularly those specialising in planning matters) are some of the groups that engage the services of PHA (SA) members. Professional historians are experienced in undertaking historical research independently or as part of a project team. Members of the PHA (SA) are available to lecture to interested groups on the professional aspects of the research and writing of history as well as on their particular areas of expertise.
